New Player Guide
Introduction
Welcome to the GURP community server, Glen's Utopian Role-Play ! Don't ask about the name. It's a running meme.
This server is a roleplay community around DayZ including elements like PvP, PvE, player-driven and admin-driven stories. Anyone is free to do as they wish in terms of both roleplay and gameplay, as long as they're following the rules and using their common sense.
As a new player some of these bigger Discords with a lot going on can be a bit daunting so hopefully this page will help get you on your feet ready to go. If you have any question, please feel free to ask the community in ⌨︱general-text or to ping an admin directly. We are more than willing and happy to help.
Overview
Here's what we advise you to check out first :
- Our lore page to get a grasp of the lore, no need to read the whole thing if you're not willing to, there's a summary at the top
- Rules to … Well make sure you're not breaking any
- ℹ︱server-information finally, to know how to connect to the server
Where to start
Once you are ready to begin on the server you have a few options :
- Just playing as standard - Very light RP, very little interaction - just enjoy the game with the community in a social aspect
- Play solo, build a character background and faction background for yourself, start interacting with others
- Join an existing faction! You can check Faction Ads to see who is recruiting.
Joining the server
First of all, check out the ℹ︱server-information channel on our discord for the server IP and password.
Once joined, you'll start with a knife as well as some basic necessities. From then on, the start should be similar to official servers - if you are completely new to the game, watching some videos about a Namalsk start on Youtube can help. We run a mod to make the cold harsher, so dress well!
If you want a faster early start, reach out to other players in RP channels such as 87.8MHz radio for assistance! People are happy to oblige and very often willing to help people get on their feet as to help remove that early game start.
Now what?
Well, you're likely going to need a few days to settle here on the island, but if you're like the rest of us, it's pretty sure you're going to like it here. The community is very inclusive, and toxicity isn't as common as in other internet communities.
If you're willing to help GURP thrive even more than it already did, please consider checking out our Patreon. Patronage starts at 1 pound! If not, you can also just help us by boosting the Discord server (for Nitro users) or simply share the word about how great our community, which you are now a part of, really is.
Roleplay Basics
On GURP, you are playing a character in the world described here. To enjoy the experience, set yourself some goals, interact with people as you would if you were that character in that world, use the right RP channels as described in the New Player Guide. If you feel like you got it, then you can start right away on the server. Should you want to introduce your character to us out of character, you can use our player LinkedIn.
Still lost? Need some advices or basics to Roleplay? We got you.
Roleplay involves creating and portraying characters in fictional settings or scenarios. Participants assume the identity of their characters and interact with others in the same environment. It's a form of collaborative storytelling where the outcome often depends on the choices and actions of the characters involved. Feel free to use other Sci-Fi universes as examples, but keep it logical within the confines of DayZ and the GURP lore.
Disclaimer: We do not enforce enforce high levels of RP on players, you have a choice in what level of RP you want to engage with. You only have to communicate in the right channels as the basic level of RP here. The following post is but a helper stating RP basics and is there to help you should you want to dig deeper into the roleplay aspects of the server.
Getting Started
Create a Character
Develop a backstory, personality traits, and goals for your character. Consider the setting and the GURP lore, and ensure your character fits within it. Give your character strengths and weaknesses for a balanced roleplay experience. Write all of this down in 🎓︱player-linkedin.
Observe and Learn
Spend some time observing ongoing roleplays to understand the style, tone, and expectations of the community. You can see how other players roleplay in 87.8MHz radio for example. Ask questions and seek guidance from experienced roleplayers in ⌨︱general-text.
Engaging in Roleplay
Communication
Respect other players' boundaries and consent in both in-character and out-of-character interactions. Clearly distinguish between in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) communication. Use proper grammar and punctuation to maintain a high-quality roleplay experience. On the server, you can use “//” to switch to OOC channels.
Roleplay Etiquette
Avoid controlling other players' characters (power-gaming) or making your character too invulnerable (god-modding). Be open to plot twists and collaborative storytelling. Resolve conflicts or disagreements maturely and respectfully.
Character Development
Allow your character to grow and evolve through their experiences. Collaborate with others to create engaging storylines and conflicts, for example by making allies or joining a faction. Be flexible and adapt to the evolving narrative.
Tips for a rewarding roleplay experience
Stay Consistent:
Maintain consistency in your character's personality, actions, and backstory. Communicate any character changes or developments with other players.
Have Fun:
Remember that roleplay is a creative outlet and a form of entertainment. Enjoy the storytelling process and the interactions with other characters.
Respect Others:
Always be respectful and considerate of fellow roleplayers. If a roleplay isn't enjoyable or conflicts arise, address them calmly and constructively.
