Ethica (Year 2226)
Essential Information
- Humanity originated on Earth, in the Solar System, but has since expanded across numerous distant star systems, establishing colonies throughout human-controlled space.
- Several independent governments coexist under the Interstellar Governance Council (IGC), preventing large-scale wars.
- Smaller conflicts and wars between factions remain common, particularly in remote systems where authorities frequently turn a blind eye.
- The Ethica Initiative, sponsored by the IGC, was announced as a major colonization program offering individuals, corporations, and organizations the opportunity to settle a newly discovered star system.
- Millions applied for the initiative, but only a limited number were selected through an official lottery. Those selected were promised access to land, resources, and the freedom to establish their own settlements and industries.
- The first colonists are now preparing to establish themselves in Ethica, a remote system whose unfamiliar environment presents both extraordinary opportunities and considerable challenges.
- With resources scattered throughout the system and no established political authority on the ground, the future of Ethica will depend largely on the decisions of its new inhabitants.
Humanity Beyond Earth
Centuries have passed since humanity first ventured beyond the Solar System. What began with small research outposts and mining stations eventually grew into permanent settlements, industrial colonies, and entire civilizations scattered across distant stars.
Earth remains humanity's birthplace, but it is no longer the center of everything. Generations have been born and raised on worlds far away from the planet of their ancestors. For many, the Solar System is little more than a distant place in history books.
Humanity's expansion, however, did not bring unity.
Different governments emerged, each with their own territories, interests, and ambitions. To prevent humanity from repeating the devastating wars of its past on an interstellar scale, these governments eventually established the Interstellar Governance Council, a joint political authority built around cooperation, diplomacy, and mutual agreements.
On paper, the arrangement worked. Trade flourished, colonization continued, and large-scale wars between member governments became increasingly rare.
In reality, peace was considerably more complicated.
Beyond the prosperous core systems, conflicts over territory, resources, and political influence continued. Corporations employed private military forces to protect their interests, governments supported competing factions through unofficial channels, and entire colonies occasionally found themselves caught between rival powers.
The IGC rarely intervened unless a conflict threatened the stability of the wider interstellar community. As long as the fighting remained contained, the governments involved were generally content to look the other way.
Humanity had found a way to prevent its greatest wars, but it had never truly learned to live in peace.
The Ethica Initiative
When the discovery of the Ethica system was announced, it quickly attracted attention across human-controlled space.
Located far beyond the established colonies, Ethica was presented as a system with enormous potential. Preliminary surveys suggested the presence of valuable natural resources, promising locations for permanent settlements, and opportunities for scientific and industrial development.
Rather than granting exclusive rights to a single government or corporation, the IGC announced the creation of the Ethica Initiative, an ambitious joint colonization program intended to open the system to a diverse population of pioneers.
The announcement was accompanied by an extensive recruitment campaign.
Anyone could apply. Independent prospectors seeking their fortune, corporations looking to expand their operations, scientists eager to explore an unknown system, military veterans searching for a new purpose, or ordinary families hoping for a fresh start.
The promise was simple: a new home, a new purpose, and a future of their own making.
With millions of applications and only a limited number of places available, the selection process combined an initial evaluation with a lottery. Those fortunate enough to be chosen received official confirmation of their participation, along with the necessary arrangements for their journey.
Selected participants were promised opportunities to claim land, establish settlements, exploit local resources, and build businesses and communities largely free from the political restrictions of more established systems.
For some, Ethica represented an opportunity to become wealthy. For others, it was a chance to escape old rivalries, debts, obligations, or simply a life they no longer wanted.
Whatever their reasons, thousands accepted the invitation. And you are one of them.
Welcome to Ethica, pioneer.
